Two horses, inextricably together, moving as one against that wide open valley floor. Pink shapes scatter across the foreground, loose and almost abstract, while a bold green hill dominates the background, thickly painted and alive. Two brown hills flank it, the sky pale and wide above. There's a juxtaposition between the intimacy in this one and all the open space around them.
The brushwork is some of the most textural in the series… the green hill is built up in heavy, directional strokes that give it real mass and presence. The valley floor is lighter, more gestural, pink and gold worked together loosely. The horses are simply rendered but commanding, a still point in the movement. Oil pastel warmth hums through the foreground.
