For me, this painting is about that feeling of watching a mother and her foal share a moment so quiet and perfect you have to paint it. The longer I paint, the more I realise that even when a subject seems accidental, it rarely is. Protection. Freedom. Belonging. The instinct to hold on forever, and the obligation to eventually let go.
A flash of luminescent pink cuts through the upper left… unexpected, electric. The background moves and shifts, loose and atmospheric, all olive, sage and sienna. The mare and foal are rendered with real presence, warm and solid against the world around them. The brushwork is expressive and free… the background built up in sweeping, layered strokes, the mare and foal more defined, palette knife marks giving them form and weight. Outlines of colour catch the light, alive against the green.
